Meaning of the First Death Faced by Nursing Students During Clinical Practice: Based on Nurses’ Perspectives

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was conducted to comprehensively investigate nurses’ first encounter with the death of a patient during clinical practice in nursing college.
Methods: The participants were seven nurses who had experienced patient death during clinical nursing practice at a hospital in Korea. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis method suggested by Giorgi.
Results: The participants’ experiences were structured into four themes as follows: frustrated by the rapid changes in the patients’ body, being powerless in the death of a patient, feeling the same way as the grieving patient’s family, and learning professionalism as a future nurse.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, nursing students realized the need for a good death and professional nursing for dying patients. Emotional support must be provided to reduce the fear of end-of-life care and form a positive attitude toward death in nursing students who experience patient death during clinical practice.
